I think the Contemporary Art program at the Substation is great, but I think there needs to be a more diverse program, there is no buzz about the place, I notice a lot of weddings take place on Saturdays. I value being able to see Melbourne Festival avant-garde Japanese rock bands there. I attended the Williamstown High School Fundraiser “War Child” at the Substation last Wednesday, the students loved being in the space presenting a professional standard show. These two poles represent the kind of balance the substation should strive for on a regular basis. Bring back the markets, the gigs (like Ed Keupper and Dave Graney), the Substation art prize, the VCE art show and keep the contemporary art and performance, they can coexist and thrive. An education program that includes students from local schools would be great. More generosity towards the community and their capacity to appreciate and participate in the substation programs needs to occur. There are some great examples of contemporary art spaces that include their local community members effectively without mitigating the seriousness of their intent. In fact, it’s a worldwide trend for arts institutions to work at becoming relevant to their local communities. A bigger budget may be needed, but one thing is certain the alternative is obsolescence.
Replying to attend meeting.
I wish to attend the meeting on Tuesday 6 August 2019.
